Ian Shanks comments following this evening’s reprehensible scenes

Progressive Unionist Party South Belfast Spokesperson Ian Shanks commenting following this evening’s reprehensible scenes in which children were to the fore front of unwarranted and unjustifiable heavy handed policing.

“I share my disgust with the Officers and members of South Belfast Young Conquerors Flute Band as well as the parents of the young band mascots and junior Orange participants following today’s events involving the PSNI after the junior Orange return parade along the Ormeau Road earlier this evening.

This appalling incident overshawdowed a dignified family orientated parade. We would like to make it clear this band and these parade participants had at no stage set out to cause any criminal damage or destroy any property yet were subject to what can only be described as a police assault. The PSNI must be held accountable for their heavy handed approach which involved wielding batons and using pepper spray on and injuring junior girls in the Lodge and other children in the band, some as young as five years of age.

I have and will be continuing to liase with the band and subsequently demanding answers from the PSNI Asap.

These deplorable actions cannot and will not go unchallenged.”
