Dear First Minister

Northern Ireland Protocol

I am writing to you on behalf of Jim McHarg, Grand Master, and the Executive of Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland.
The Northern Ireland Protocol exists to ensure the progress that has been made by the people of Northern Ireland over the 22 years since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement is secured into the future. It is also built on the principle of consent and the Agreement is crystal clear that any change in the constitutional position of Northern Ireland within the United Kingdom can only come if the majority in Northern Ireland consent to any change.

Since its implementation, the reaction from mainstream Unionism is abundantly clear; we have seen media coverage of banners, posters and murals being put up rejecting the Irish Sea Border with an emphatic NO to the Northern Ireland Protocol. This Protocol has effectively transferred the border from being a land one between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, to being a sea border between Scotland and Northern Ireland.

This has a profound effect on Scottish trade with Northern Ireland as the EU has very strict rules about what can enter its market when it comes to some foods such as meat, milk, fish and eggs and therefore have to go through a border control post at sea ports in Northern Ireland. Many Scottish businesses are feeling the results financially, putting further strain in the already precarious livelihoods of thousands of Scots.

The Members of the Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland stand foursquare with our fellow United Kingdom citizens in Northern Ireland and urge our Scottish Government to support their Northern Ireland counterparts for the Protocol to be disapplied.
Yours sincerely

Edward Hyde
Grand Secretary
Grand Orange Lodge of Scotland
